Daniel Read, Soldier

Daniel joined the American Revolution on the side of the colonists in 1776, shortly after the war broke out. According to his own words, “In Dec. 1776 when the British troops took Newport, R.I. an alarm was spread through the adjacent country and the militia was mustered. I then belonged to a militia company under the command of Capt. Jacob Ide of Attleborough, Mass in Col. John Daggett’s Regiment. Captain Ide immediately marched his company, of which company I was one, to Providence, and from thence to Warren R.I. where we remained for several days. I cannot now recollect the exact number, but I think it may have been 8 or 10, more or less, when orders were received to detach one quarter of the militia for three months service on the shores of Rhode Island, and the other three quarters were permitted to return home. I was one of those who were permitted to return home.” For more on Daniel’s Military service, please click here.

Daniel Read, Congregationalist

As a composer of hymns, religion was a central part of Daniel Read’s world. Daniel was a Congregationalist. Congregationalism is a form of church governance where each congregational body runs their own church instead of being governed by a large denominational hierarchy. One of the earliest forms of religion brought to America by colonists, the Puritans brought the concept of Congregational Churches to the New World after separating from the Church of England.

The above tree is a very simple one, showing Daniel’s immediate family- his parents, biological siblings, and his wife and children. Daniel is highlighted in dark blue.
